A Professional’s Tips for Maintaining Electric Dock Doors
Electric dock doors are very convenient. All you have to do is press a button and the garage door opens. It’s pretty neat! However, such doors do require some maintenance every once in a while. Most people choose to call contractors and have them do it, but if you don’t mind getting dirty, here is what you need to do:
- For starters, you can’t let your dock doors get dirty and covered with dust and grime. Use a mild detergent and a soft brush to scrub the dirt and grime that may have accumulated throughout the year. It will help you get rid of some corrosive materials that may deteriorate your door.
- If the door is made of wood, then you may need to clean and maintain it a lot more frequently. Wooden doors need to be sealed against water damage because it can warp the wood. Once warped, the door no longer fits and can become stuck. Metal doors also need protection against rust and corrosion. Most garage door contractors recommend you repaint your door once every two years.
- The door has static and moving parts. The moving ones need to be lubricated annually. All dock doors are spring operated. The springs allow it to go up and down effortlessly. A light spray oil can be easily applied on all springs, rollers, hinges, and pivot points. It will keep the metal parts working without wearing out. Just make sure they are always properly oiled.
- If the doors are taking too long to open or close, then you may need to check the springs too. They can be adjusted to perform better. It’s a bit more complicated, so you may want to read a couple of articles on that topic first.
